Bearpark, County Durham – A sharp rise in reports of dog fouling across the village has sparked concern among residents and local authorities, prompting calls for dog owners to clean up after their pets or risk legal consequences.

Locals have reported increasing instances of dog mess on pavements, green spaces, and even near children’s play areas. For many, the sight – and unfortunately, the smell – of uncollected waste is becoming an all-too-familiar part of daily walks.

🧫 Health Risks Go Beyond Inconvenience

Dog faeces can carry parasites such as Toxocara canis, which can lead to toxocariasis – a rare but serious infection that can cause blindness, especially in children. It can also pose risks to pregnant women and individuals with weakened immune systems.

💷 Fines and Legal Consequences

Under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act and related local bylaws, failing to pick up after your dog can result in an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice of £100. Persistent offenders could face prosecution, leading to fines up to £1,000.

The council has requested additional support from Durham County Council Neighbourhood Wardens and increased patrols in affected areas in problem zones around the village.

🤝 A Call to Community Spirit

Beyond the health and legal ramifications, residents say the issue is straining community goodwill.

“Most dog owners here are responsible,” said local dog walker and Parish Coucillor Iain Singleton. “But the actions of a few are giving all of us a bad name. Bearpark is a lovely village – we need to look after it together.”

Local councillors are encouraging residents to report incidents of dog fouling via the council website or by contacting the Neighbourhood Warden service. Bins are available in all major walking areas, and free waste bags are being offered through the parish council along side planned litter pick events during the summer.

🐶 What You Can Do

  • Always carry dog waste bags when out walking.

  • Use the public bins provided – or take it home if none are nearby.

  • Report repeat offenders with time and location details.

  • Talk to fellow pet owners and encourage community responsibility.

As summer brings more families and dog walkers outdoors, the message from Bearpark’s community is clear: pick it up – or you may pay the price.
